The Urban Age Institute fosters leadership and innovation between and among cities in areas of strategic urban planning, urban policy and management, sustainable environmental planning, and poverty reduction. In the past five years, the UAI has pursued two principal thrusts to foster dialogue and exchange of practice internationally. One is to probe theory and practice of how cities learn, the tools for which include web-based surveys and in-depth case studies, part of which has been financed through a Senior Fellowship award from the German Marshall Fund of the United States. This work is leading to articles published in reviewed journals and a forthcoming book: and a forthcoming book: Beyond Smart Cities—The Janus Face of Learning in an Urban World .

A second thrust is to scan horizontally across a broad spectrum of thinkers in public and private sectors as well as practitioners in cities for fresh ideas about sustainable development in cities. This is accomplished in an annual flagship event, The Meeting of the Minds . Meeting participants have included a Nobel Prize Laureate, government officials (governor, attorney General, principal secretaries) and corporate CEOs and private foundations. Sponsors include companies such as Toyota, Siemens, IBM, and Zipcar, and organizations and foundations such as Urban Land Institute, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, World Resources Institute, New York Academy of Sciences, Regional Plan Association of New York, World Bank, among others. UAI principals have worked with World Bank, WHO, Inter-American Development Bank, GTZ, UN Capital Development Fund, UN Habitat, Lincoln Land Institute, CityNet in Yokohama, Metropolis, United Cities and Local Governments, Woodrow Wilson Center, East West Center and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Principals have experience in most of Latin America as well as in key countries of South and East Asia and Africa.
